Real Estate Purchases...Sight Unseen?

Monday, August 15, 2005

Would you make an offer on a home sight unseen? Years ago nobody in their right mind would have said yes, but times have changed. It seems that with the increased amount of information on the Internet, home seekers are seeing photos online and sending in their offers without ever stepping foot in the home! For inexpensive vacation homes or time shares, this seems not so out of the ordinary that one would put down a deposit before making a trip to see the home, but sight unseen purchases are occurring on million-dollar homes! According to a recent New York Times article by Tim Neville, a Florida agent sold two homes in the last year for around $1 million each to British buyers who had only seen photos of the home before making an offer!

''If people can establish relationships over the Internet without seeing each
other and get married, they can use the Internet to buy a home sight unseen,''
said Todd Costigan, a senior manager at the Center for Realtor Technology in
Chicago. ~ New York Times

Could you part with tens of thousands to put a deposit on a home sight unseen? I'm not so sure...
