A group of Realtors in Oregon are advocating a statewide tax on homes valued more than $100,000.00.
They argue that by setting a tax rate of 0.5% on the selling price, and putting the money into a fund to help poor families buy homes will actually help the real estate industry.
The proposal is likely to appear before the 2007 legislative session.

What a crock. Taking money out of the pockets of citizens and turning it over to a bureau who will then allocate money will never solve a problem-it will help perpetuate one, though.
Years ago I rented apartments to people who were on Section 8. A very large percentage of those who "qualified" specialized in "working the system" for taxpayer funded "entitlements". Those same people would not even consider looking for employment. They became dependent on the taxpayer and developed the attitude that they were entitled to money and benefits that OTHER people work hard to pay for.
A real estate transfer tax is simply a continuation of that govenment mindset that we must extort money from those who produce and provide it to those who take, after taking a good share for government overhead and spifs.
It's time to say no to more taxes and yes to more personal responsibilty on the part of our citzens. We are growing an ever increasing population of of people who are losing the work ethic that made our country great in the first place. If we continue to feed the machine-we risk being a nation filled with low achievers.. even lower than we now have... and as we continue to allow government to steal from the producers in the form of ever increasing taxes, we will truly become a pitiful societal mess sooner than anyone might expect.
As a Realtor for more than 30 years, I can assure you that there are very few Realtors who think that a transfer tax should be imposed on our citizens.
